The Body as Threshold: Ancestral Memory and the Journey of Soul

w/ Doug Van Houten & Laurie Adams

September 13 – 18, 2026

Harrod’s Creek Sanctuary, Goshen, Kentucky

IN THE JOURNEY of our personal and collective becoming, we re-member Soul as the dynamic embodiment of ancestral currents, unseen mysteries, and Earth’s consciousness. Soul is like a river of memory and intelligence that uniquely shapes how we perceive and come to dance in the web of life.

In this offering, we approach our embodied soul as a ceremony with Deep Time — the vast field of belonging that holds ancient memory and future possibility.  The body — woven of desire, grief, stardust, whale, prayers, fire and aquifer — is often the first site of remembering what might have been forgotten or denied, including our deep belonging, wholeness, sensitivities and wounds.

Through the portals that awaken our deep imagination, emotion and senses, participants perceive echoes of ancestral stories etched in the bones and sinew — the rivers, trees, and hollows — of our human and earth body.

We engage the felt presence of human, more-than-human and even mythic ancestors who call us to remember and understand at the individual, and often more collective level. In soul-rooted conversation and ceremony, generational perspectives and patterns soften, shift and the worlds around and within us are rewoven.

Held in the context of the initiatory and on-going journey of soul, generational and even cultural, sensitivities and wounding patterns may be alchemized to become unique soul gifts and our mythopoetic way of loving and creating in the dance of cosmos.

We gather on verdant Kentucky land to breathe life into practices that help repair the cultural wholeness that might someday nourish future ones.  We’ll engage earth-based and soulcentric practices, including —  dreamwork, creative expression, self-designed and collective ceremony, deep imagery work, dance and free movement, and time wandering the land.   With guidance, you’ll begin to notice recurring themes, archetypal images, and patterns arising in your embodied experience, in wanders on the land and dreams. You’ll receive invitations from the guides, sometimes gentle and sometimes exquisitely challenging, into deeper dialogue with Soul, ancestors and the more-than-human world.

This particular offering — attuned to the body’s wisdom in relationship with the soul’s journey — can be a beautiful and powerful complement to other pathways honoring ancestral realms. While we welcome you to study familial history, no previous experience or knowledge of ancestry is necessary.  Grounded in respect, we tend to clear thresholds and invitations to the ancestral realm. The gifts of this way of relating ripple across and through past and current time.

We are honored to be joined in this program by Peter Scanlan, who comes as an elder, who co-shaped this work alongside Annie Bloom. This work is rooted in the lived experience of Peter and Annie, who have long served as our mentors and teachers. Together they spent years as guides with Bill Plotkin and the Animas Valley Institute and trained with Meredith Little and Steven Foster at the School of Lost Borders. This work is further informed by the work of Mary Oliver, David Whyte, Martin Prechtel, Joanna Macy’s Work that Reconnects  and the fields of eco-depth psychology, paths of initiation, and earth-rooted spiritualities. Each of us carries this lineage forward through our own lived practice and relationship with the land. We carry the lived experience of ancestral memory in the body as powerful guide through the initiation and our ongoing soul journey.  Both of us have known the body as powerful vessel of lived experience and ancestral memory that has guided us through times of initiation and have shape our ongoing soul journey.

When we remember our place in the longer arc of many generations, we awaken to our belonging in the pulsing heart of a billion-year-old cosmos and Earth's dreaming. In doing so, we participate in regenerating a culture aligned with life amid the great unravelling and turning transformation of our times, becoming worthy ancestors for those yet to come. Wherever you are on your path—new or deeply initiated—the ancestors long to meet you there.
